Portugal is going through a chronic shortage of qualified welders. The pace of work in Sines, Porto and Setúbal already exceeds local market capacity, and hiring poorly costs you dearly — in rework, delays and lost contracts. This guide sums up what cannot fail when hiring welders in Portugal.
1. ISO 9606 or AWS certification — in force
The starting point is a valid ISO 9606 certificate covering the process, position and material on site. Typical validity: 3 years, with 6-month revalidation. Always ask for the certificate issued by an accredited body.
2. European paperwork in order
For non-EU professionals: a Portuguese-law employment contract, NISS, tax number, employer's accident insurance, and depending on the case a residence card or intra-EU posting (A1 form).
3. Real industrial experience
Welding a coupon in a lab is not the same as welding 6G pipework 12 meters up in a refinery shutdown. Ask for references from previous projects and, ideally, contact details of inspectors who signed off on the work.
4. Up-to-date PPE and HSE training
Working-at-heights, confined-space and equivalent European training, and specific PPE (auto-darkening hood, leather suit, spats) are documents the inspector will request on site. Without them, the worker doesn't enter.
5. Clear contract clauses
Who covers lodging, travel, consumable PPE and overtime? Who is liable if the worker quits mid-project? Vague contracts always end in mid-project disputes.
The most common pitfalls
- Expired certificates or wrong process (e.g. 135 when the job requires 141).
- Opaque subcontracting — your supplier doesn't even know who is on site.
- No professional liability insurance.
- Slow mobilization — 4 weeks to replace a welder in a planned shutdown is too long.
